So therefore you wouldn't be keeping your colony there. The game is won in the resolution phase after all game effects have taken place. The Saboteur has to resolve its power during this phase. Therefore, the colony marker can still be moved but that doesn't mean the game is over yet. The Saboteur does its power. The marker is moved back to 4. All game effects have now been resolved, check the score. No 5? Game's not over then.

Moving the colony marker isn't an immediate win. Notice on the Tick Tock. It says the Tick tock immediately wins the game if there are no tockens left on the sheet. This is because, his power of removing a token is used during the resolution phase. When going to remove the token, that is the time his power can be zapped. But if no one has zapped it, then there are no other circumstances that can be resolved and therefore he wins.

The same can be said with the wild Schizoid flare. After someone has moved the colony marker to 5, someone can play this flare to switch to that player's color. The flare user is now the one with 5 points. That doesn't mean this player one yet. All game effects haven't been resolved because someone can still Card Zap the flare and therefore the colors are not switched, but that still may not be resolved because someone may zap the previous Card Zap etc. Once all that is done and no one can affect the game anymore, then the score is checked the resolution phase is over and the player who has the 5 points wins.

Also with the Glutton Super. During a cosmic quake it can be played to immediately win. An argument can be made because that flare card can be zapped. But does the word immediate trump it? I believe so.

In short, moving the colony marker to five does not constitute an immediate win. In Cosmic anything can happen, therefore you all players must be able to effect the outcome if they can. Once nothing can be affect the outcome anymore, then all effects are resolved, the resolution phase is over and the winner is free to celebrate.

Hope this clears it up as much as possible. Do send Fantasy Flight an email though. They haven't updated the official Errata/FAQ since '09. They've added 60 aliens since then. They should be pressured into giving us an update.

The dice was rolled at the end of each players turn (who wasn't in the inner region, or had to skip the turn)

The reaper, ice queen and toad king saw a lot of action (no need to keep track of "1" snowflakes or spells).
The dragon scales where not very common in the first half of the game, and more adventure cards where played, and we had a lot of events happening.
In all I'm very happy about it. I really like to use all expansions at the same time, but the dragon scales made it a bit to messy, but when randomly getting new scales and dragon kings with the black dice, it works very good.

I've started adding penalties to things such as when the PCs are trying to commuinicate with someone, but they're openly carrying weapons or wearing armor. I'm thinking of just having an unarmored bonus instead.

Problem with this concept is that PCs who wear armor already aren't doing the talking for the party..or the climbing..or the swimming.

Not to nerf armor, but I think if the "damaged" condition is used liberally, armor can become as expensive as it "should be."

Just having a read through the book after being asked a perfectly reasonable question in another thread. Id like to have this flagged so we can see what the community in general thinks and if we can have this clarrified.

Long story short - in the unit phase the following steps happen -

we replace unit leaders

we move out of formation dudes

we roll to remove supression

we make retreat moves

we declare actions

we resolve actions.

Now, any unit with more supression markers on it AFTER rolling to remove supression is said to be retreating, which "will restrict the actions a unit can take during the unit phase".

A unit still retreating after trying to remove supression takes a move action to the squad leaders closest table edge. It would be fair to assume this is the "make retreat moves" step during activation.

However, after this step we declare actions - with 9 supression markers on a squad, yet no reaction markers the unit is entitled to a single action. We have already made a move action in the "make retreat moves" step, but does this count as our 1 action?

My presumption is yes, as it even states it is a "move action", and the number of actions a unit gets during its unit phase is determined by if it has reaction or supression markers upon it, not at any one particular step. Page 47 states that the number of actions a unit gets is determined at the beginning of its activation after rolling to remove supression.

Thank you FFG for reading this, and an advanced thank you also to the community who now doubt have their own views on this. This seems remarkably clear, yet any complications that can be flagged in an FAQ are always a bonus.

The rulebook suggests the concept of social encounters quite strongly, and there are a number of careers (agitator, for example) who have career abilities that are directly linked to social encounters. And yet, none of the adventures I have read so far have any social encounters detailed. Yes, plenty of situations where a social encounter *could* happen, but nothing explicitly set up. Disappointing to say the least.

However, this also got me thinking about why we need to set up social encounters. Combat encounters don't require any set up - they just happen, and we all know how to run them. To achieve the same level of "instantaneous" social encounter, you need to have the same range of actions available that players can just dive straight into. I haven't done anything in detail yet, but my thinking was just as you have Melee action for Weapon Skill, Ranged action for Ballistic Skill, Assess the Situation for Discipline etc. you should have actions the likes of Charm, Guile and Leadership. These would be universal actions and would provide the baseline for running any social encounter.

To go to the next level would be to make a system akin to Green Ronin's A Song of Ice & Fire, where you have an Influence threshold, equivalent to Wounds, so that over the course of a social encounter you can overcome someone's influence score and get your way. Unlike wounds, however, these would need to be tracked by person which is a bit cumbersome (i.e. if you inflict 4 influence on me, that has no benefit to someone else who still treats me as being full influence). You'd also have social Soak and social Defence, and different action cards would inflict different damage. This would be above and beyond the existing Shame rules from Lure of Power, which it seems to me apply to a very specific situation of a social duel (although perhaps another way of thinking about it is Shame being the equivalent of a Critical Hit threshold).

Anyway, some ideas but no actual solutions for you I fear! But this is the route I'm thinking of going, which should make it much easier to launch into a social encounter on the fly.

I'd like to be able to pile all three expansions' area cards, missions etc into one game, but the 1st and 2nd game missions' locations just don't show up enough. Also the scalable monsters are great but they don't show up nearly enough when you're using everything at once.

It would be great to have a Blender expansion (non-standalone obviously) with updated missions (just need to add Expansion locations), extra Scalable monsters/events, and some search cards to help with the decks sizes. Stopping Omega with a party of Modern heroes in an Infinity Orb location might seem a little odd but with everything else going on in this game a little time travel would hardly be out of place.

However it does seem as though units makes a retreat move action (which is listed as one of the phases in the unit phase), but im not sure if that takes up its 1 and only action in its action phase.

I strongly suspect it goes, as it claims on page 47 that retreating limits the squads options, so i think that "retreat move towards table edge" then means the unit my not perform any other actions.

They work so well all 110 aliens are now much safer from my girlfriend constantly spilling her water. Side note- we decided to get her a sippy cup, which she is now required to use during our games (it may seem extreme, but trust me she has a gift for knocking cups over).

I even used some of the spare sleeves for my "Rex: Final Days of an Empire" character sheets. They're slightly longer than the alien sheets, just a teeny tiny bit of the edge stick out of the top.

For those thinking about sleeving their cards, the green Fantasy Flight Supply sleeves work great. The deck will become much bigger but it still shuffles fine. I can't believe I waited so long to sleeve my cards. We play this game so much at my house. After a year of playing, the cards were getting worn out. I highly recommend getting the Fantasy Flight packs. The sleeves are great and they tell you exactly which ones fit so there is no measuring. Buying the game and all expansions, I've invested a lot of money in this game, and now I know I will be able to enjoy it for more years to come.

But I must say- with the game and all the expansions, sleeving 327 cards takes some time. Have your friends help :)

My problem with the cover saves as they stand is this: An anti-tank weapon of the non-big-tank-cannon sort usually only rolls 1 die, and can therefore only sustain 1 hit. Period. No more. Which means a vehicle target in cover is totally immune to that weapon, unless said weapon has a rule that negates cover.

In addition, I also agree with the throng that is of the opinion that armor saves are less than reasonable, considering that armor is already factored in to the weapon mechanism.

I surmise that the reason for the big Warfare change from Tactics is the sheer amount of fire with a larger amount of units at higher point levels - a 300+ game is a busy battlefield - and the sheer murder rate using straight Tactics rules (no armor saves, cover is chancy, etc.). I would guess that someone was appalled to find a casualty rate that more closely resembled 40K - 70%+ - in a game, and wanted greater unit survivability? I have noted in the games I've played that the wipe-out rate isn't nearly as high.

I am still disturbed by the cover-totally-negates-single-shot-AT weapons business...

Cover counts as an extra save on the armor roll and armor rolls negate a single point of damage not hits. So a 1/3 that hits a target in soft cover still does 2 damage potentially.

Perhaps he becomes able to somewhat "predict" where a new cluster of the hive fleet will appear.

Perhaps he gets a bonus to sense tyranids - a gaunt hive below the surface, a sneaking lictor, etc. Tyranid things that not even an auspex would be able to detect well, he can - at a penalty, but he still can.

Maybe if there's not a synapse creature around, lesser nids (think gaunts and rippers) won't attack him. Not even if he attacks them. The only time they'll try to hit him is if if he's caught in the crossfire of a Horde attack against his KT brothers. Creatures that form in Hordes therefore won't intentionally target him ever, but synapse creatures (nid warriors and above) try to target him before all others, or at least some do, sensing the unnatural connection and acting to stamp it out as it's a 'corruption' of the Hive Mind, since he's in the synapse but doesn't 'smell right. '

Maybe give him Hatred: Tyranids and Talented - Forbidden Lore: Xenos (only applicable to Tyranids) for free as well since he now knows more about them than he ever wanted to.

The Techmarine in my game plugged into the CPU of a gigantic asteroid base...which just so happened to have the machine spirit of a 15,000-year-old grand cruiser. We're still dealing with the implications (and why a seemingly-innocuous mining base was built around a warship's machine spirit and why it had Titan legion banners in its command center...) but Insanity Points are a great place to start!

When have you resolved social challenges in encounter mode?

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=149&efcid=3&efidt=656324

by RARodger.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Forum.
I'm trying to get this to work right, but it's really not gelling for me. To be clear, I've played plenty of games where the core mechanic is applied to social situations (Dogs in the Vineyard, Burning Wheel, various Fate games to name a few) so the concept isn't novel to me, but there's something about the action card mechanic that has made slipping in and out of encounter mode challenging for me.

Part of the problem comes from a disconnect in the rules, I think. Rereading the rules last week I came across the description of Story Mode as the montage between events, but elsewhere it's used more generally.

Anyway, I'm posting this not to look for alternatives, houserules, work arounds, etc. I'm curious to hear about times you successfully used encounter mode for social encounters successfully with the rules as written. I want a better sense of how it's supposed to work so I can decide if it will work for me and my group.
